Previously we have reported that Taiwanese chipset manufacturer MediaTek is working on a new mid-range chipset named Helio P40. Unlike other MTK chipsets that have a large number of cores, the Helio P40 has reduced the number of cores to hexa-core (6-Core). Even the new chipset will be built with TSMC 12nm manufacturing process. Of course MediaTek strives to offer new chipsets to smartphone vendors.

As Gizmochina reports, one Weibo user says if MediaTek has sent a chipset sample to customers for testing and the first customer interested in the Helio P40 chipset is Meizu. For chipset availability is said to arrive in the first quarter of 2018.

Meizu itself is known to often use chipsets from MediaTek because most Meizu smartphones come with MediaTek chipset, including flagship Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus. But Meizu’s latest Meizu smartphone, the Meizu M6 Note comes with a power-saving chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. Going forward Meizu will use chipsets from three major manufacturers, namely Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung Exynos.

For Helio P40 itself is intended to compete with Snapdragon 670 chipset is also expected to appear in the first quarter of 2018. For now, the middle-class chipset is still ruled by Snapdragon 660 which has a performance almost equivalent to Qualcomm’s flagship chipset.
